Will Power was crowned winner of the Hy-Vee One Step 250 at Iowa Speedway, achieving his 43rd victory in the NTT INDYCAR SERIES. This triumph places him fourth in the series' history in terms of wins.
The race on Sunday, July 14, 2024, was Power's nineteenth attempt at this short oval located east of Des Moines, Iowa. Despite securing pole position seven times, he had never won here. Starting from the 22nd position due to a crash in Saturday's qualifying session, Power used a combination of fuel-saving strategy and quick pit stops to surpass championship leader Alex Palou.
The gap between Power and Palou at the finish line was just 0.3915 seconds. Scott McLaughlin, winner of Saturday's race, led the first 94 laps but lost the lead after a yellow flag on lap 101. McLaughlin eventually finished third.
Power commented on his strategy during the race, mentioning that he saved fuel and used his car's fast pace to advance positions when the leaders pitted. This strategy allowed him to overtake Palou in the second pit stop and maintain the lead until the end.
A crash on the last lap involved Sting Ray Robb, Alexander Rossi, Ed Carpenter, and Kyle Kirkwood. Fortunately, all drivers emerged unscathed, although Robb was taken to the hospital for precautionary evaluation.
With this victory, Power reduces Palou's lead in the overall standings to 35 points with six races remaining. The next competition will be the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto, where Christian Lundgaard of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing won last year.
