Possible Introduction of Hypercars in the Asian Le Mans Series

ACO Explores Hypercars Inclusion in Asia with Private Teams

Share:

The Hypercar category could be incorporated into the Asian Le Mans Series, according to ACO President Pierre Fillon. Currently, LMH and LMDh vehicles participate in the World Endurance Championship and the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship, but Fillon mentioned that they are exploring the possibility of including these cars in the Asian series.

Challenges and Preparations

One of the main challenges is the need for large teams to manage the Hypercars. Fillon mentioned that, although it is a project they are working on, it is not yet defined and requires careful planning. The extension of the joint regulations of the FIA, ACO, and IMSA until the end of 2029 supports this type of long-term initiative.

Possible Timeline

Although it is not expected that Hypercars will be integrated into the 2024-25 campaign, Fillon indicated that the goal is to do so as soon as possible, depending on the feasibility and necessary preparations. The idea is that this category will be exclusive to private teams, given that Porsche is currently the only manufacturer selling LMDh cars to customers, with other manufacturers like BMW considering this possibility in the future.

Manufacturers' Opinions

Reactions among manufacturers have varied. Thomas Laudenbach of Porsche Motorsport expressed his willingness to participate as long as other manufacturers also offer their cars to customers, highlighting the importance of initial support for the success of the teams. For his part, Andreas Roos of BMW considered the inclusion of Hypercars in Asia premature due to the technical complexity of these vehicles, suggesting that it could be viable in a few years. Rob Leupen of Toyota Gazoo Racing commented that it was the first time he had heard about this proposal and that it would require further evaluation.

Future of Hypercars in Asia

If the incorporation of Hypercars in the Asian Le Mans Series is realized, it is expected to be an incentive to attract more private teams in the region, with no current plans to include this category in the European Le Mans Series, where the main category will remain LMP2. The prospect of seeing Hypercars competing in Asia represents a significant development in endurance racing, expanding opportunities for teams and manufacturers in this region.

Final Considerations

The ACO continues to evaluate the feasibility of this initiative, with ongoing discussions with manufacturers to properly manage the possible inclusion of Hypercars in the Asian series. The goal is to strengthen competition and diversify options for private teams in Asia, promoting the growth of motorsport in this region.
