In 2025, Paraguay will become the 38th country to host a round of the World Rally Championship, as announced by President Santiago Peña in Asunción. This announcement was made during the ceremonial start of the Rally Transchaco 2024, part of Paraguay's national championship.
President Peña stated that this global event highlights Paraguay's greatness and its ability to organize world-class events. Paraguay's inclusion in the WRC calendar reflects a multi-year agreement aimed at strengthening rallying presence in South America.
Paraguay has a rich rallying tradition, with prominent drivers like Gustavo Saba and Fabrizio Zaldivar regularly competing in international events. Additionally, Diego Domínguez stands out in the junior WRC categories, while Paraguayan drivers have dominated the South American CODASUR Rally Championship in recent years.
WRC Events Director Simon Larkin noted that discussions with Paraguay have been ongoing for several years and that this agreement reflects the country's passion for rallying and its commitment to sustainability. Paraguay generates all its electricity from renewable sources, aligning with the WRC's commitment to using fossil-free fuels.
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem emphasized the importance of including Paraguay in the WRC, thanking the organizers and President Peña for their support. The rally's headquarters will be in the city of Encarnación, in the Itapúa region, known for its red gravel roads and proximity to the Paraná River, promising a spectacular setting for the event.
In addition to Paraguay, other countries like Chile and Argentina are also looking to maintain their place in the WRC calendar. Currently, the WRC is negotiating the renewal of its agreement with Chile. Additionally, new rounds have been confirmed in the Canary Islands and Saudi Arabia.
My interest in motorsports has been a constant in my life, a passion that has led me to work in a variety of important events in this field. Among them are the World Rally Championship, Formula E, NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Mexico and dirt track competitions.
