Shane van Gisbergen, a New Zealand driver, achieved his second victory in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Sonoma Raceway. Van Gisbergen took the lead on a restart with 11 laps to go and crossed the finish line with a 1.323-second advantage.
During the race, Van Gisbergen secured the pole position and led 32 laps, overtaking Austin Hill in a tight Turn 7 during a late restart. Hill lost four positions in the maneuver. Both drivers acknowledged the close contact, having had a similar incident at the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) earlier in the season.
Van Gisbergen celebrated his victory by signing a rugby ball and throwing it into the stands, as he did the previous week in Portland. "It was a race full of ups and downs, but in that last restart I gave it my all," Van Gisbergen commented.
Hill, who led 21 laps and finished fifth, was unhappy with the contact but chose not to make strong statements. "I'll let the fans decide," Hill said, highlighting the importance of the points earned and his top-five finish.
Sheldon Creed from Joe Gibbs Racing finished in second place, followed by Sam Mayer from JR Motorsports in third. Austin Green, a rookie from Jordan Anderson Racing, impressed by finishing fourth after starting in 22nd place, achieving his second top 10 in three races.
Ty Gibbs, a former Xfinity Series champion, led 26 laps, but a slow pit stop and a crash on lap 50 took him out of contention. Other notable drivers included John Hunter Nemechek, who finished sixth, and Cole Custer, who finished eighth, maintaining his championship lead by 12 points.
The NASCAR Xfinity Series moves to Iowa Speedway for the next race, the HyVee Perks 250, where Christopher Bell and Chase Briscoe won in 2019.
