Elton Sawyer, NASCAR's Senior Vice President of Competition, explained that difficult track drying conditions and the possibility of a finish in the early morning were the main reasons for ending the Coca-Cola 600 early. The decision was made considering multiple factors, including the experience from previous events and collaboration with key partners.
Sawyer commented on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "Morning Drive" program that due to Sunday's conditions, completing the remaining 151 laps would have pushed the race past 2 a.m. This would have been inconvenient not only for competitors and fans but also for all the workers present at the event.
NASCAR's decision took into account humidity, weather conditions, and the available drying equipment. According to Sawyer, despite efforts to continue the race, the challenge was considerable. Additionally, he mentioned that seeing Kyle Larson compete again would have been ideal, but the circumstances did not allow for it.
Past experience and collaboration with Speedway Motorsports and TV partners also played an important role. Sawyer emphasized that although the final decision rests with NASCAR, all factors, including traffic and safety, are considered. If the race had continued, the estimated finish time would have been around 2:30-3 a.m., which was not feasible.
