The 2024 NASCAR All-Star Race, scheduled for May 19, will be held again at the renovated North Wilkesboro Speedway. This annual event, still one of the most anticipated on the NASCAR calendar, will incorporate several new features in its format, including strategic elements related to tires and changes in the qualification trials and pit crew challenges.
This year, the event will feature the implementation of three types of tires throughout the race weekend: prime tires, option tires, and wet weather tires. Each team will have nine sets of tires to manage across different events, from practice to the main race. The choice of tires promises to add an additional level of strategy, as teams will decide the best time to use each type, depending on track conditions and wear duration.
Regarding qualification, this year's edition will introduce a combination of the traditional pit crew challenge with a fast lap on the track. This new format will not only determine who gets the pole position for the first qualifying race but will also decide the pit selection order based on total times.
The racing weekend will start with qualifying events on Friday night, followed by two qualifying races on Saturday, which will define the starting lineup for Sunday's main race. Additionally, the All-Star Open will give drivers not automatically qualified a chance to compete for a spot in the final race.
The 200-lap All-Star Race will include two scheduled breaks, where teams must perform mandatory tire changes. This, along with NASCAR's overtime rules, will ensure that the competition remains fair and tight until the end.
