Delays in the Implementation of Fast Charging in Formula E

Pit stops for recharging during races will not be introduced in 2024 as planned

It is unlikely that Formula E will incorporate pit stops for fast recharges during 2024, as indicated by Jeff Dodds. Although this innovation was scheduled to coincide with the launch of the Gen3 vehicles last year, its implementation has faced multiple delays.

Adapting Formula E facilities to the new car models has been one of the main obstacles. Although the technology was expected to be tested at selected events in 2024, starting with the Misano E-Prix this weekend, the tests have not yielded the expected results. An incident involving a battery fire in Valencia, although not directly linked to fast charging, paused the development of this technology.

During the Mexico City E-Prix at the start of the season, a test was conducted in the first free practice, but technical issues forced its indefinite postponement. The FIA has suspended track tests of this technology for now.

Dodds has stated that they will not compromise the quality of the races by introducing technology that does not yet meet all safety and effectiveness requirements. Although the possibility of implementing fast charging at the end of the season remains open, it seems more reasonable to wait until the introduction of the Gen3.5 cars next year.

Despite the challenges, Formula E continues its efforts to advance battery charging technology, although the adoption of this particular innovation may require more time than initially anticipated.
