Paraguay seeks to enter the World Rally Championship calendar for the year 2025, as revealed in a recent meeting with the country's president. The possibility of including Paraguay in the world rally circuit arose earlier this year, as the WRC aims to establish a calendar of 14 rounds for the upcoming year, with two of them in South America.
Currently, the WRC maintains an agreement with Chile that ends at the end of the year, although negotiations are underway for a possible renewal. Paraguay and Argentina have shown interest in hosting WRC events, with the preference to select two countries from among these three South American candidates to integrate next year's calendar.
Recently, WRC Events Director Simon Larkin met with Paraguay's president, Santiago Peña, to discuss the possibility of the country hosting a round of the world rally championship. Although a definitive agreement has not yet been reached, Larkin confirmed that Paraguay is among the options considered by the championship for next year.
Larkin pointed out that rallying enjoys great popularity in Paraguay, with a thriving national championship and significant participation of Paraguayan drivers in the WRC, such as Diego Domínguez. Additionally, he mentioned that the country has around 30 Rally2 category cars, making it a relevant market for this sport.
Regarding the WRC calendar for 2025, significant changes are anticipated, including the return to Spain with an asphalt event in the Canary Islands. A possible return to the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia as an option, is also being considered, with an announcement expected in the near future. Ireland has expressed its intention to reach an agreement to host an event for three years starting next year, subject to funding and the final decision of the Irish government.
My interest in motorsports has been a constant in my life, a passion that has led me to work in a variety of important events in this field. Among them are the World Rally Championship, Formula E, NASCAR Cup Series, NASCAR Mexico and dirt track competitions.
