Formula E has announced today the creation of the NXT Gen Cup, the first global junior touring car racing series that will include both male and female drivers. This event will serve as a platform to boost the development of young talents.
The NXT Gen Cup will be featured in the four European events of Season 10 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, with stops in Misano, Monaco, Berlin, and its grand finale in London. The series plans to have its most robust calendar to date, extending to a total of six races in Europe. The initial lineup of drivers, many of whom are under 17 years old, will be announced starting next week.
The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship introduces the NXT Gen Cup as a dedicated support series, offering young male and female talents the opportunity to compete on the same circuits as Formula E's 22 world-class drivers. This effort also aligns with Formula E's mission to showcase new sustainable electric racing formats in iconic locations around the world, while providing fans with additional on-track action as part of the race day spectacle.
Subject to the final FIA approval, the NXT Gen Cup's first appearance in the Formula E paddock will take place in Misano, Italy, on April 13th and 14th, marking the start of the World Championship's European tour and the first time it has raced at the World Circuit.
The Swedish-born series will feature two 20-minute practice sessions (except in Monaco with just FP1), a 20-minute qualifying session, and a 20-minute race, reaffirming Formula E's commitment to growing sustainable motorsport and EV technology.
The NXT Gen Cup is a completely electric racing series for 20 young drivers between the ages of 15 and 25 who are taking their first steps in motorsport. The goal is to educate them and develop their talents to build a successful racing career. The single-make series uses an all-electric race car developed and built by Lestrup Racing Team, the LRT NXT1, based on an electric MINI Cooper SE road car. This front-wheel drive, 180bhp race car features an additional 60bhp when push-to-pass features are active, with a 30kWh battery and an 800 V system. Features also include regen when braking, adjustable Öhlins shock absorbers, and Hankook Semi-slick all-weather tires. 20 race cars have been built for the series, providing all drivers with equal equipment. All charging operations are managed together with NXT Gen Cup's Official charging partners, ABB E-Mobility.
