Pascal Wehrlein won in London and heads into the final round of the Formula E championship at the top of the drivers' standings, with a five-point lead over Jake Dennis, ahead of the title decider at the ExCeL circuit.
Wehrlein started from pole and took advantage of a full-course yellow caused by Lucas Di Grassi's stricken car to complete his mandatory PIT BOOST stop without losing the lead. Nico Müller, his teammate at Porsche, stayed close in the early laps and held back Mitch Evans, who was looking to move up from third.
Jaguar TCS Racing responded with a different strategy for Evans. It activated ATTACK MODE earlier than the rest and brought forward his pit stop in an attempt to get past Müller. The move forced Wehrlein to react, but the subsequent caution period halted Evans's momentum, and he finished third, leaving him 21 points behind in the overall standings before the final round.
Jake Dennis of Andretti saved his final ATTACK MODE activation for the closing stages and charged from outside the top six to second place, overtaking António Félix da Costa and Dan Ticktum to limit the gap at the top of the championship to five points.
Wehrlein acknowledged that the result came down to a combination of his starting position and the calculation for the mandatory pit stop. "The gap opened up quite a bit, and that allowed me to close out the race comfortably. Everything is decided in the last race, and today we did a good job," he said, adding that he will look to repeat the result in the finale.
Dennis felt that second place was the maximum he could achieve that day and admitted that a mechanical issue for Müller had helped him at one point in the race. "It could have been fifteenth, but we came second with good overtakes and the car working well. I'm hoping for a fair fight. Nobody remembers who finished second," he said.
Da Costa, third for Jaguar during the same caution period, questioned Porsche's moves on track but acknowledged the position advantage the team had at that point in the race.
Wehrlein's result reverses what happened at the previous round in Tokyo. Wehrlein arrived at that event with 141 points at the top of the championship and left with the same tally. On Saturday, contact with Da Costa broke his suspension and sent him into the wall. On Sunday, a setup error for dry conditions left him out of the points for the second consecutive race. Dennis capitalized on both days with a second and a third place and took over the lead. Evans, who had briefly held the top spot on Saturday, also failed to score on Sunday due to damage to his Jaguar.
In the teams' championship, Jaguar has 276 points to Porsche's 271, with Andretti on 229 and mathematically out of the title fight. Da Costa's third place keeps Jaguar's hopes alive in that standings, where the margin over Porsche also stands at five points.
For Porsche, the possibility of overturning a deficit in London has a concrete precedent. In 2024, Wehrlein arrived at the final round on the same track twelve points behind in the standings and took the drivers' title that season. "Whatever happens, we win and lose together," said Florian Modlinger, Porsche's team director, referring to that episode. Müller, 44 points behind the leader, has no realistic chance of fighting for the individual title.
The title decider takes place on Sunday, August 16, with qualifying scheduled for 10:40 local time and the race start at 15:05, on the same ExCeL circuit where Saturday's race was held. Wehrlein, Dennis, and Evans remain mathematically in contention for the drivers' title, while Jaguar and Porsche decide the teams' crown with just a five-point gap. This date also marks the series' final visit to the London circuit and the end of the GEN3 era, with which Porsche won five world titles. Next season, the British round will be held at Brands Hatch.
