During a recent meeting at their R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina, NASCAR revealed adjustments to the qualifying process for Cup Series races.
The most noticeable change will affect all competitions except those at superspeedways. In these events, drivers will be divided into two groups for qualifying. The top five drivers from each group will advance to the final round, competing for the pole position. Positions 11-40 will be determined in a novel way. Cars that do not advance from Group A will occupy the outer row for starting positions 11-40, while those from Group B will form the inner row. This system replaces the previous one, where positions were determined by the fastest lap, regardless of the origin group. Brad Moran, Cup Series Managing Director, explained that this change aims to balance any advantage created by changing track conditions.
But there's more. NASCAR has tested a fully electric racing SUV. This vehicle, without a specific manufacturer's design, completed 340 laps in three days at Martinsville Speedway, with David Ragan behind the wheel. This foray into electric technology is a significant step for NASCAR, opening a new chapter in its history. The compact design and functionality of the electric test vehicle are clear indicators of NASCAR's commitment to innovation and sustainability.
With these developments, NASCAR is making its entry into the realm of electric mobility. Still, there is curiosity about how fans, loyal to the tradition of stock cars, will receive this shift towards electric. We are eager to see the reaction of the American public, known for their attachment to tradition, to this new chapter in history.
In another announcement, NASCAR will continue using mufflers for the Clash and the Chicago street race. A new design has been introduced to help reduce heat in cars generated by mufflers. Additionally, after Ryan Preece's impressive accident at the Daytona 500, NASCAR plans more pavement in critical areas of the oval. Finally, Cup teams will be allowed LED boards on their pit box signs, increasing sponsor visibility.
Fans can now start marking their calendars for the start of this season. Action kicks off with the Busch Light Clash on February 4th at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. After touring the country, the Bluegreen Vacations Duel qualifiers will take place on February 15th, culminating in the legendary Daytona 500 on February 18th at the Daytona International Speedway. Undoubtedly, 2024 promises to be a year full of great excitement and significant advances in the world of motorsports.
