Alex Palou's fifth victory of the 2026 IndyCar season came at Nashville in a race held on Monday, something the series had not done since 2016. On Sunday, the FIFA World Cup final pushed the start time beyond what was planned, and a thunderstorm convinced organisers there was no window to race. On Monday, with extreme heat that forced the distance to be shortened from 300 to 225 laps, Palou waited for his moment behind the three Penske cars, read the caution flags, and lifted his fifth trophy of the year. The Spanish football team had won the World Cup less than 24 hours earlier. Spain had a perfect Sunday and an even better Monday.

David Malukas had destroyed his Penske Chevrolet in Saturday practice, could not qualify, and started from the back of the grid. The first caution, on lap 19 after Caio Collet hit the wall in Turn 4, opened a window that he took advantage of by staying out while most pitted. He took the lead and stretched a very long stint on used tyres that allowed him to build a lead of more than three seconds. The strategy forced him to fall to the back after his stop and wait for the rest to complete their cycle. It worked. He finished third, behind Newgarden, and snatched the second place in the championship from Kyle Kirkwood, who had defended Saturday's pole during the first stint but faded to 10th place. Scott McLaughlin was fourth, and Felix Rosenqvist closed out the top five in the best Meyer Shank Racing Honda.

Pato O'Ward finished seventh for Arrow McLaren, a result that continues the inconsistency of a team that won at Mid‑Ohio with a 1‑2 and at Nashville placed all three cars inside the top eleven, with Nolan Siegel 11th and Christian Lundgaard 16th. Mick Schumacher, who had started 16th, used every caution and other drivers' retirements to climb to eighth place, his second top‑10 of the year with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. The German completed a mistake‑free race on a high‑speed oval, the type of circuit where he has the least experience, and scored important points for a team that also placed Kyffin Simpson in ninth place in the second Chip Ganassi Racing car.

Marcus Armstrong retired with a mechanical issue before the halfway point. Christian Rasmussen hit the wall while following Alexander Rossi and broke the rear steering arm. Rossi slowed abruptly in Turn 3 due to a car failure, and Scott Dixon, running behind, could not avoid him. The impact sent Dixon to the garage for repairs and knocked Rossi out of the race. Will Power also hit the wall on a restart and lost several laps.

The championship now heads to the Bitnile.com Grand Prix of Portland on August 9, the first of a run of six races in seven weeks that will decide the title.
