Christian Lundgaard won the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America, the 10th round of the NTT IndyCar Series, by charging from last place. Contact with Scott Dixon at the first corner punctured a tyre and broke the front wing on the Arrow McLaren car, which pitted on lap 2 and emerged at the back of the field. From there he staged a comeback that culminated when Marcus Armstrong, leading by 2.7 seconds with five laps to go, lost power at Turn 6 on lap 53. The race finished under yellow, and Lundgaard scored his third career victory, his second of the 2026 season, by 0.6 seconds over David Malukas. Will Power was third, Kyffin Simpson fourth, and Alex Palou fifth.

Palou started from pole with his fifth consecutive qualifying win and led 13 laps, but on lap 29 race control handed him a drive‑through penalty for pit‑lane speeding. He dropped to 22nd place on one of the longest pit lanes on the calendar and from there advanced 17 positions in the final 25 laps. His championship lead, which was 49 points over Kyle Kirkwood upon arriving at Road America, grew to 60 over Malukas and 61 over Kirkwood, who finished 10th. Lundgaard is fourth, 77 points behind Palou.

Armstrong, who qualified third on Saturday with a fever, was leading with authority when the engine in his Honda number 66 began to misfire at Turn 6. "It felt like it was just shutting off by itself. There was no indication anything was wrong," said the Meyer Shank Racing driver, who stopped at Turn 5 on lap 53. The caution set up a one‑lap restart with Lundgaard at the front. Power and Graham Rahal touched exiting Canada Corner while fighting for third, and the race ended under yellow.

"It felt like it was just shutting off by itself. There was no indication anything was wrong."

Lundgaard had first moved to the front on lap 43, when Armstrong, Malukas and Rahal made their final stops. Two laps later he pitted with an 11.7‑second lead over Felix Rosenqvist and took four alternate tyres in a 7.1‑second stop. He exited second behind Armstrong and ahead of Malukas, who passed him on lap 46 with hotter tyres. Lundgaard reclaimed second on lap 49.

Josef Newgarden led from lap 49 until he pitted and handed the lead to Armstrong. Romain Grosjean lost a wheel on track and caused one of the cautions that upset fuel strategies. Pato O'Ward started 10th and finished 12th, never getting into the fight. Scott Dixon was 11th, Marcus Ericsson 13th, and Santino Ferrucci, who started seventh, finished ninth for A.J. Foyt Enterprises.

The IndyCar series returns on July 5 for the Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio. Palou extended his lead for the second consecutive race, and Lundgaard, with two wins in 2026, is now in the championship conversation.
