Andretti Formula E secured its first 1-2 on track in the history of the world championship, although a post‑race penalty to Felipe Drugovich took it away from the top three at the Sanya E-Prix. Jake Dennis started from pole and maintained control during a race interrupted by a red flag and two Full Course Yellows. The Briton finished with Pepe Martí of Cupra Kiro 2.1 seconds behind, a gap that rewarded the Spaniard's charge from the back of the field. Nyck de Vries took third place with Mahindra Racing.
Dennis and Drugovich set the pace from the front row on the 2.52‑kilometre circuit. Both activated the two mandatory Attack Mode periods with an additional 50kW of all‑wheel drive late, allowing them to conserve energy compared to rivals who spent more early on. The race was stopped with a red flag after a multi‑car crash at the hairpin, where Dan Ticktum hit Mitch Evans from behind, creating a blockage with several cars involved. Evans, the championship leader, could not continue due to rear‑wing damage.
On the second restart, Dennis and Drugovich retook the lead, but Oliver Rowland, the reigning champion, used Attack Mode to jump from 12th to the lead in a few laps. Rowland lost pace later and, while running outside the top three, lost control and hit the Tecpro barriers, putting him out of the race. Shortly before, Norman Nato had been pushed into the wall by Pascal Wehrlein. Edoardo Mortara also retired with a failure on lap 25.
António Félix da Costa led the race on lap 30, but carried a five‑second penalty for causing a collision at Turn 6. Dennis passed him on track, and the sanction dropped the Jaguar driver to fourth place. Drugovich had followed Dennis to the finish, but stewards reviewed an incident with Wehrlein and determined that the Brazilian had caused a collision. The five‑second penalty applied to his final time, with a margin smaller than that to his pursuers, dropped him from second to fifth. The penalty benefited Martí and De Vries, who took the podium spots.
Jake Dennis commented after the race: "Starting from pole and keeping control during such a chaotic race shows the great work of the team."
Maximilian Günther was sixth for DS Penske, ahead of Nico Müller, Jean‑Éric Vergne, Taylor Barnard and Lucas di Grassi. Wehrlein finished 14th, a result that worsens the damage for the championship leaders.
The 11th round shook up the overall standings. Evans remains at the front with 128 points, but could no longer extend his advantage. Rowland stays second with 109, and Mortara third with 103, both failing to score. Wehrlein dropped to fourth with 101 points. Dennis, who was eighth, jumped three spots to fifth with 94 points, ahead of António Félix da Costa (90) and Nico Müller (89). Drugovich climbed two positions to 12th with 42, while Günther advanced two spots to 16th with 18.
The Formula E now heads to Shanghai for a double‑header on July 4 and 5, Rounds 12 and 13 of a season where the top four are separated by just 34 points.
