Trackhouse Racing announced on Wednesday that Kevin Magnussen will drive the number 91 car in the Anduril 250, the NASCAR Cup Series race to be held on June 21 on the street circuit at Naval Base Coronado in San Diego. The Dane, with 185 Formula 1 starts and a full Hypercar schedule with BMW in 2026, will make his NASCAR Cup debut with Project 91, the program that Justin Marks' team created to bring internationally renowned drivers to the series. The San Diego date falls for Magnussen just seven days after having competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans with BMW.
The philosophy of Project 91
Magnussen's selection fits the philosophy that Trackhouse has maintained since 2022 with this program. Project 91 debuted with Kimi Räikkönen at Watkins Glen and exploded onto the media scene in 2023 when Shane van Gisbergen arrived from Australian Supercars, had never driven a Cup Car, and won in Chicago. That victory turned the New Zealander into a full‑time driver in the series; the last appearance of the No. 91 car was with Hélio Castroneves at the Daytona 500 in 2025.
Magnussen had already driven a stock car in 2022, when he and Mick Schumacher shared the track with Chase Briscoe on the Charlotte roval. Back then the Dane gave a definition that sums up what he faces: "It's like you've never driven a race car before." Briscoe, who saw the lap times of both, estimated that within a handful of laps they were already three or four seconds off a competitive pace.
