The Coca‑Cola 600 was stopped 27 laps short of the scheduled 400 because the thunderstorm that had been hovering around Charlotte Motor Speedway finally broke over the oval. By then, Daniel Suárez had been out front for several laps in the Chevrolet No. 7 of Spire Motorsports, helped by a call from his crew chief who gambled on changing only two tyres during the final stop under caution. Suárez held off attacks from Christopher Bell and Denny Hamlin until NASCAR displayed the red flag and decided not to restart the race after determining that drying the track would take at least ninety minutes. It was his third victory in the Cup Series and his first since 2024.
"If it weren't for Kyle, I wouldn't be an Xfinity champion nor would I have my opportunity in Cup. Winning this race for him is incredible."
The result came on a night heavy with meaning. Minutes before the start, NASCAR CEO Steve O'Donnell led the tribute to Kyle Busch, who passed away on Thursday at age 41. "Kyle Busch is NASCAR. He was one of a kind, and there will never be another," he said in the presence of Samantha Busch, children Brexton and Lennix, brother Kurt, and parents Tom and Gaye. The ceremony included a moment of silence and a rendition of Amazing Grace. Suárez, who had shown his emotion during the pre‑race broadcast, picked up the baton after climbing out of the car.
Toyota dominated for three stages, and rain altered the outcome
The race had a clear master for most of the night. Tyler Reddick controlled the early pace, led 120 laps, and kept the Toyotas at the front. Hamlin won the second stage, and Bell took the third in a battle that at times featured five cars from that manufacturer among the leaders. Suárez, on the other hand, started 14th, reported vibrations in the car, and fell two laps behind the leader before the team corrected the problem in two unscheduled stops.
The final caution for lightning split pit‑lane decisions. Several of the Toyotas that had controlled the race opted for fresh tyres; Spire Motorsports sent the No. 7 car back on track with only two new tyres and a privileged track position. The restart put Suárez in front with Bell glued to his bumper and Hamlin third. Bell looked for a gap for several laps without finding one, and Hamlin admitted that their fight prevented him from launching a clean attack: "The 20 and I were racing each other really hard because we knew whoever could get clear would have a shot at the 7." The rain intensified, NASCAR stopped the race, and Suárez celebrated on the front straight with the trophy in his hand.
How the championship stands
Reddick keeps the lead with 620 points, followed by Hamlin with 498 and Ryan Blaney with 446. Ty Gibbs moved up to fourth with 425, Chase Elliott dropped to fifth with 423, and Kyle Larson is sixth with 386. Suárez entered the top 10 with 350 points, in tenth place. The next event on the calendar is the Cracker Barrel 400 at Nashville Superspeedway on Sunday, May 31.
