Marcus Ericsson claimed the first pole position of his IndyCar Series career with a lap of 1:34.356 that no one could match in qualifying for the Java House Grand Prix of Arlington, the inaugural race on the 2.73-mile street circuit surrounding the AT&T Stadium and Globe Life Field in north Texas. The pole came in Ericsson's 117th start in the category, with a margin of nearly half a second over Alex Palou, who will start second. Pato O'Ward will start third and Will Power fourth, placing three of the top six qualifiers with Honda power from Andretti Global or affiliated teams.

The new Fast Six format opened the door for Ericsson

Qualifying in Arlington debuted a format where the six drivers advancing to the Firestone Fast Six are inverted: the slowest of the group goes out first for their lap and the fastest closes. Ericsson, who advanced as the sixth and last driver by just hundredths over his teammate Kyle Kirkwood, had the advantage of being the first to set a time on a clean track, and none of the five who followed could get close.

"I've waited quite a while for this, I can tell you that," said Ericsson. "The last pole I had was in 2013. In St. Pete, I was two hundredths away from first. Today the team did an enormous job, because in Q1 we were all over the place and for Q2 and Q3 they improved the car incredibly."

Newgarden and McLaughlin paid a heavy price for Arlington's walls

Josef Newgarden, the championship leader with 78 points, crashed in morning practice and damaged his chassis, forcing Team Penske to build the backup car for qualifying. Newgarden could not advance past the second round and will start 11th. Scott McLaughlin, who had been fastest on Friday and declared that Arlington was "my favorite street circuit of all the ones I've raced," repeated his teammate's script with a nearly identical crash at turn 8: he touched the inside wall, hopped over the curb, and ended up against the concrete barrier. McLaughlin will start last of the 25 cars.

Everyone liked the circuit on Friday, but Saturday made it clear that the combination of close walls, fast corners, and a surface more uneven than expected punishes any minimal mistake. Both Team Penske incidents occurred at similar points, with the car catching the inside of a corner and losing control after hopping the curb.

Palou recovered ground in qualifying

Palou arrives at Arlington with the worst result of his recent season fresh in memory: a retirement due to contact on lap 21 at Phoenix that erased all the advantage he had built with his commanding victory at St. Petersburg, where he won by 12.49 seconds. The second position on the grid gives him a real opportunity to regain ground in the championship, especially since Newgarden starts 11th and Kirkwood, second in points with 73 units, qualified seventh despite being fastest in Saturday's morning session.

Kirkwood recorded the fastest lap of all combined qualifying, a 1:33.887 in the second round, but by not advancing to the Fast Six, that time didn't help him fight for pole. It's a detail worth keeping in mind for tomorrow's race: the Andretti Global No. 27 has plenty of pace, it just needs clear track.

Both Meyer Shank cars advanced to the Fast Six

Felix Rosenqvist and Marcus Armstrong occupied the third row with fifth and sixth place, the best collective result for Meyer Shank Racing w/ Curb Agajanian in an IndyCar qualifying session so far this season. Rosenqvist had already shown signs on Friday with the fifth-fastest time in practice, and Armstrong provided solidity for a team that placed both drivers in the top 12 at Phoenix.

The race was moved from its original time due to a forecast of strong winds in the afternoon in central Texas. The green flag will drop at 11:00 a.m. local time (noon Eastern Time), with broadcast on FOX, FOX Deportes, and the FOX Sports app. The warm-up session was also moved up to 8:50 a.m. local time. With McLaughlin starting last, Newgarden from 11th, and Kirkwood seventh, the race promises a complicated path for the championship's top three on a circuit no one knows in race configuration.
