Smith capitalizes on Nemechek's mistake to win Fresh from Florida 250 in overtime

Chandler Smith capitalized on a miscalculation by John Hunter Nemechek in the final moments of overtime to win the Fresh from Florida 250 at Daytona International Speedway, with the decisive push from his teammate Ty Majeski in the final play that left Giovanni Ruggiero second by hundredths of a second, exactly as happened to him in this same race last year. The outcome occurred when Nemechek, who was leading the pack entering Turn 3, moved up to block Ruggiero but left the bottom lane completely exposed, allowing Smith, running sixth at that moment, to attack through that space with Majeski pushing him from behind to the flag in the opening race of the 2026 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season. Christian Eckes finished third, followed by Majeski in fourth and Nemechek in fifth.

"Ty made us win because he committed to a Ford, I'm surprised the 62 didn't block that."

Majeski had to choose between pushing Smith, his teammate at Front Row Motorsports, or Ruggiero who drives a Toyota. At Daytona, those manufacturer alliances can determine who wins and who loses by hundredths, and Majeski chose team loyalty over any other consideration, which turned out to be the difference between Victory Lane and second place. Nemechek, who had controlled the race in the final laps, acknowledged his tactical error, explaining that "I should have moved to the middle and blocked the 17 faster than I did, I didn't anticipate it like I should have coming off Turn 4."

For Ruggiero, it's the second consecutive time he has finished second in this race by a minimal margin, making Daytona his particular nightmare. "I probably would have pushed John Hunter to win, but he almost crashed me twice," he explained regarding the lack of coordination among the Toyotas, adding that "as a group we need to improve because Tanner Gray, Taylor Gray, and I worked well together, but the others seemed to go their own way."

The brief return of Stewart

Tony Stewart had not competed in NASCAR since 2016, and his public statements suggested that chapter was closed, but the opportunity to participate in RAM's return to the category, absent since 2012, was enough to convince him, although his participation lasted barely 36 laps before Jake Garcia lost control of his Ford on the front stretch and pushed Stewart's RAM number 25 into the outside wall, where repair attempts were futile. "I felt comfortable running three-wide in the high line, I didn't feel like we were putting ourselves in danger," Stewart said about the incident that ended his night. For RAM, the results were modest on their first day back, with Brenden "Butterbean" Queen as the manufacturer's best driver in seventh place, Daniel Dye finished 17th, and Mini Tyrrell 19th.

Travis Pastrana finished 15th in his participation, but Garrett Mitchell, known as Cleetus McFarland on YouTube, had the shortest night when he crashed on lap 5, and his Chevrolet went out of control, hit the inside wall, and plowed more than 100 yards of infield grass. "I'm an idiot," was his self-critical assessment upon leaving the care center.

The race set a new record with 32 lead changes among 12 different drivers, but that figure hides an uncomfortable reality about superspeedway racing: leading guarantees absolutely nothing until the last lap, as demonstrated by the cases of Michael McDowell, Carson Hocevar, and Justin Haley. McDowell led 20 laps but finished 24th, Hocevar also led 20 laps before retiring due to suspension issues on lap 88, and Haley led another 20 laps but finished 22nd, meaning the three drivers who spent the most time at the front didn't even reach the top 10. Daniel Hemric had his own problem midway through the second stage when NASCAR black-flagged him for missing a spoiler support, costing him three laps in repairs and any chance of a good result.

Smith leaves Daytona as the leader of the 2026 Truck Series championship. Ruggiero carries another second place by hundredths at this track. Majeski has a favor owed that Smith will eventually have to repay.
