In 2023, Porsche Penske showcased its ambition by incorporating an additional Porsche 963 LMDh from its IMSA SportsCar operation to the already strong presence of two cars in the WEC squad. Although the results did not meet the team's expectations, the value of having three cars on the track was evident. Jonathan Diuguid, the head of PPM, shared with Motorsport.com his determination to repeat and improve this strategy in 2024.

Porsche has officially applied for an additional entry for Le Mans 2024. The opportunity to race without earning points in the Hypercar class offers a unique chance for Porsche to showcase its technical ingenuity and competitive capability. Recall that in 2023, the third car was driven by Nick Tandy, Felipe Nasr, and Mathieu Jaminet.

Despite the experience and resources of Porsche Penske, obtaining the entry for a third vehicle presents challenges. The growing competitiveness in the Hypercar class and the increase in entries in the WEC to 19 cars add uncertainty to the process. Furthermore, preparing three high-performance cars in such a demanding scenario as Le Mans is no easy task, but Diuguid is confident, emphasizing improvements in infrastructure and parts supply.

The revised IMSA schedule for 2024 does not seem to be a significant obstacle to Porsche's plans. Although there are events close to the dates of Le Mans, such as the revamped Detroit round and the 6 Hours of Watkins Glen, the team's experience and planning work in their favor. Porsche Penske's adaptability and preparedness will be key to their performance in both IMSA and Le Mans.
