Mechanical problem eliminates Lategan from contention for Dakar victory, leaving Toyota with no options

Nani Roma moves up to second place and cuts the gap with Al-Attiyah to 8:40

Henk Lategan lost over four hours in Stage 11 of the 2026 Dakar Rally when the left rear wheel bearing on his Toyota Hilux broke at kilometer 140 of the special stage between Bisha and Al-Henakiyah. The Toyota competitor had started the morning in second place overall, 12 minutes behind leader Nasser Al-Attiyah, but the mechanical problem took him completely out of the fight for victory and handed that spot on the leaderboard to Nani Roma, who is now 8:40 minutes behind the Dacia leader.

Lategan's elimination means Toyota Gazoo Racing no longer has any drivers in the top 7 overall, with Toby Price occupying eighth place, 56:59 minutes off the lead. The gap is too large to threaten the final podium with two stages remaining.

Nani Roma would need to cut approximately four minutes per stage over the two remaining specials to catch the leader, an extremely difficult task considering that Al-Attiyah lost 26 minutes two days ago due to navigation errors but can now manage his advantage more comfortably.

Sébastien Loeb holds third place overall, 18:37 minutes behind his teammate at Dacia, although he would first have to pass Nani Roma before thinking about challenging for the lead, as the Spaniard holds a 50-second advantage over him.

Ekström wins with Ford and Dumas achieves his best result in nine Dakars

Mattias Ekström won the 346-kilometer special with his Ford Raptor in a time of 2:47:22, securing his third stage win in this Dakar, adding to his Prologue and Stage 5 victories. The Swede was at the front at all main checkpoints after taking the lead near kilometer 100, maintaining a consistent pace that no other competitor could match.

Romain Dumas finished second, 1:22 behind the winner, achieving his best result in nine Dakar participations. The experienced driver competes with Ford Racing under his own RD Limited structure after the American team contacted him in September to participate in this edition, also entering him in the full-season W2RC world championship. His performance in Saudi Arabia could influence the team's future decisions regarding his continuation in the program.

Carlos Sainz finished third in the stage, 2:26 behind Ekström, recovering positions after losing 45 minutes yesterday due to navigation errors and penalties. The Madrid native holds fifth place overall, 28:48 minutes back, a gap that keeps him mathematically in contention if the top four were to have serious problems in the remaining stages.

Al-Attiyah manages without taking risks

Nasser Al-Attiyah finished 16th in the stage with a conservative time, achieving his goal of not ceding significant ground. The leader started the morning with a 12-minute advantage over Lategan and knew he could manage his margin without attacking the clock, a strategy that proved perfect when the Toyota's mechanical problem increased his lead over the new second-place driver.

Lategan's bearing failure gave Al-Attiyah a more comfortable lead over the new chaser, allowing him to calculate exactly how much time he needs to concede in each remaining stage to hold onto the lead. With an 8:40-minute margin over Nani Roma, the Dacia driver could lose over four minutes per day and still reach the final finish in Yanbu as the winner, although his experience tells him that managing the lead without relaxing is safer than playing with margins.

Dacia also has Loeb in third position, creating a situation where the Romanian team could place two cars on the final podium. The nine-time WRC champion is just 50 seconds behind second place in the standings, a gap that can change with a single navigation error or minor mechanical problem, keeping alive the possibility that Dacia finishes with two drivers among the top three.

Ford has speed but needs others' problems

Ford has three drivers inside the top 5 of the overall classification, although none are within eight minutes of the leader. Dacia controls first and third positions with enough margin to manage the remaining stages without taking unnecessary risks, putting pressure on the American team to attack with no guarantees that it can cut enough time.

Cavigliasso wins in Challenger and Heger in SSV

Nicolás Cavigliasso won the stage in the Challenger category with his Taurus Evo Max, completing the 346 kilometers in 3:17:27. The Argentine finished 29 seconds ahead of Pau Spierings in another Taurus, with Dani Akeel third, 1:03 behind the winner.

In the Challenger overall classification, Spierings leads with 11:28:40, followed by Cavigliasso at 2:30 and Kevin Benavides at 3:30.

In SSV, Brock Heger won the stage with his Polaris RZR Pro R in 3:30:11, beating Jeremías González Ferioli in a Can-Am Maverick R by 51 seconds. Kyle Chaney completed the top 3, 4:19 behind the winner.

The SSV overall standings have Xavier de Soultrait in first place with 11:29:00, followed by Heger at 1:30 and González Ferioli at 2:00.

Loprais wins truck stage

Ales Loprais won the truck stage with his Iveco Powerstar in 3:19:59, finishing 2:31 ahead of Vaidotas Zala in another Iveco. Mitchel van den Brink was third, 4:19 behind the winner, with his MM Technology Dakar Evo4.

In the Truck overall, Martin Macik leads with 11:52:00, followed by Kees Huzink at 0:30 and Loprais at 1:50.

Two stages to settle the 2026 Dakar

Two stages remain before the finish in Yanbu on Friday. The volatility of this edition has shown that gaps of 10 or 15 minutes can be overturned in a single special, but the leader has enough experience to manage his current advantage without making the errors that cost him 26 minutes two days ago.

Nani Roma needs Al-Attiyah to have mechanical problems or make serious navigation errors. Ford has won multiple stages in this Dakar, but that hasn't helped them close in on the overall when Al-Attiyah manages his margin correctly.

Stage 12 will connect Al-Henakiyah to Yanbu, followed by Stage 13, which will close the 2026 Dakar Rally.
