Nasser Al-Attiyah leads the 2026 Dakar Rally with a 12-minute advantage over Henk Lategan with four stages remaining. The Qatari driver for Dacia completely overturned a general classification that showed Nani Roma as the leader with a 57-second lead over Carlos Sainz just a day ago, but the dramatic changes of the recent stages prove that nothing is settled when a single navigation error or mechanical problem can cost 20 or 30 minutes.
The 420-kilometer special around Bisha completed the marathon stage, where teams worked without external assistance overnight. Al-Attiyah finished second in the stage and regained the top spot, but the top three in the overall standings are separated by just 50 seconds between second and third, setting up a close battle for the four remaining stages.
Lategan loses 13 minutes after running out of fuel
Henk Lategan conceded 13:09 minutes in Stage 10 when his Toyota Hilux ran out of fuel mid-stage. He also made a navigation error that added lost time, finishing sixth in the stage after starting as the overall leader with a 1:10-minute lead over Al-Attiyah.
Lategan now holds second place, 12:00 minutes behind, but the volatility of this Dakar edition keeps everything open. In Stage 9, Al-Attiyah lost 26 minutes due to navigation errors and dropped from first to third. A day later, he regained the lead with a 12-minute advantage. The shifts can be just as brutal in the opposite direction.
Ford loses the top two positions in one day
Carlos Sainz made multiple navigation errors that cost him 20 minutes, plus a 15-minute penalty applied by the organization. He finished 19th in the stage with a total of 45 minutes conceded, dropping from second to seventh place overall.
Mattias Ekström suffered mechanical problems before kilometer 100 that forced him to stop for over half an hour, dropping from third to sixth place. Nani Roma finished ninth in the special and dropped to third place, 12:50 minutes behind Al-Attiyah.
Ford occupied the top two positions in the overall standings a day ago. Now it has its three competitors between third and seventh place. Roma is just 50 seconds behind Lategan in second place, keeping mathematical chances to recover positions if Toyota or Dacia encounter problems.
Serradori wins second stage for Century in seven years
Mathieu Serradori won Stage 10 with the Century CR7, taking the lead at kilometer 100 when Ekström stopped with mechanical problems. He won by 6:12 minutes over Al-Attiyah, although the organization applied a two-minute penalty for speeding.
This is only the second stage victory for Serradori and for Century Racing in the entire history of the Dakar. The first was in 2020 during the first Saudi Arabian edition. Five different manufacturers have won at least one stage in this edition: Ford, Toyota, Dacia, Mini, and Century. Serradori jumped from ninth to fifth place overall, now 33:42 minutes behind Al-Attiyah.
Loeb advances to fourth place but Gutiérrez falls out of top 10
Sébastien Loeb repaired power steering issues overnight without external help and finished third in the special, 9:20 minutes behind Serradori. Lucas Moraes was fourth, giving Dacia three cars in the stage's top 4.
Loeb moved from sixth to fourth place overall, 23:04 minutes behind his teammate Al-Attiyah, keeping mathematical chances to fight for the final podium if the top three encounter problems.
Cristina Gutiérrez suffered a rollover at the start of the stage which cost her over 15 minutes. She managed to bring the Dacia to the finish but ended up 18th in the stage, dropping from tenth to 14th place in the overall classification.
Three stages to decide the 2026 Dakar
The 12-minute gap between Al-Attiyah and Lategan seems large, but the shifts in the recent stages show that 762 timed kilometers remain (equivalent to the distance between Madrid and Paris) where anything can happen. The top three are separated by less than 13 minutes. Stage 11 will connect Bisha to Al Henakiyah with a 424-kilometer timed special.
