An Incident in the First Stage Delays the Start of the Ultimate Category

The Unforeseen Start of the Dakar

The start of the first stage was delayed due to an accident involving Lionel Baud and a spectator. This incident highlighted the inherent risks of a rally of this magnitude, not only for the competitors but also for the fans.

The initial stage, covering a timed route of 405 km to the bivouac in Al Henakiyah, started as planned. Motorcycles led the way, but the intervention of the evacuation helicopter was soon required. Hero's pilot, Joaquim Rodrigues, had an accident at 82 km, an event that required assistance from Joan Barreda and Sebastian Buhler.

But it was the incident with the spectator that truly marked a turning point in the day. Baud, Overdrive's pilot, was involved in an issue with a spectator near the starting line, requiring immediate medical attention and transportation to the nearest hospital. This incident not only emphasizes the importance of spectator safety but also the rapid response of medical services in emergency situations.

In response to this event, the Dakar organization delayed the departure of the first car, initially scheduled for 10:15 am, until 11:15 am. Despite this setback, the race eventually resumed. Audi's Stephane Peterhansel set the best time at the first checkpoint.

Amidst this chaos, there was also confusion at the beginning of the stage. Brian Baragwanath, Century's pilot, was supposed to be the first to start but did not make it on time, leading Baud to initiate the timed section. After the accident and the initial confusion, Baud returned to his position.
