Red flag benefits Andretti's Attack Mode strategy

Jake Dennis ended an 11-month winless streak by winning the São Paulo E-Prix that opened Formula E Season 12. Dennis became the first driver to win from pole position at the Anhembi Sambadrome, but the decisive factor was timing: a red flag with three laps to go found him with Attack Mode still available, an advantage he used to pass Oliver Rowland and Nick Cassidy on lap 27.

The 30-lap race was reduced to a one-lap sprint after Pepe Martí crashed into Nico Müller and Antonio Félix da Costa under a Full Course Yellow. The debutant's car went airborne and rolled several times before coming to a stop. Martí exited under his own power. Dennis controlled the final sprint and scored his first 25 points since Diriyah in January 2024.

Andretti Reads the Race Better Than Other Teams

Andretti's strategy was precise in a race where Attack Mode dictated positions. Dennis gave up the lead in the first half to manage energy and fell back to fourth place. The American team delayed the second Attack Mode activation betting on a neutralization, which occurred when Edoardo Mortara and Lucas di Grassi collided on lap 23.

The safety car regrouped the pack with Rowland in the lead, but Dennis and Felipe Drugovich still had their Attack Mode available. The green flag returned on lap 27 and both Andretti drivers activated the additional 50kW simultaneously. Dennis passed the reigning champion and Cassidy in the final sector, while Drugovich jumped from ninth to sixth.

Mitch Evans hit the wall two laps later, triggering a Full Course Yellow. Martí couldn't brake in time behind Müller and da Costa, causing the red flag that stopped the race. The restart left only one lap, insufficient for Rowland or Cassidy to attack Dennis.

Porsche Leads Constructors at Campaign Start

Porsche scores 37 points as a constructor in the first race thanks to four power units in the top six. Pascal Wehrlein finished fourth and Nico Müller fifth for the factory team, but Dennis's victory adds points because Andretti uses Stuttgart's engines. DS Penske also equips Porsche technology and placed Maximilian Günther sixth.

Porsche's start differs from that of Jaguar and Mahindra. Jaguar lost both its cars (Evans into the wall, da Costa in Martí's accident) and scores zero points. Mahindra also failed to score after Mortara received a five-second penalty for not respecting instructions on the opening lap, then crashed with di Grassi, and Nyck de Vries suffered a puncture after contact with Dan Ticktum.

Nissan recovered ground thanks to Rowland, who climbed from 13th to second place, scoring 19 points. The 2024 champion navigated traffic throughout the race, taking advantage of Attack Mode activations that kept him in point-scoring positions while other drivers cycled to the back.

Citroën Debuts with Immediate Podium

Nick Cassidy gave Citroën a podium in its first Formula E race. Cassidy started eighth and used Attack Mode aggressively in the second half to gain six positions. The two-time category champion (2023, 2024) passed half a dozen cars on the main straight during his activation on lap 19, moving up to third behind Dennis and Wehrlein.

The immediate podium is unusual for debutant manufacturers. Nissan took three races to get on the podium in 2018, Porsche needed five in 2019. Citroën achieved the result with Cassidy, who arrived from Jaguar where he won nine races in two seasons.

Jean-Éric Vergne, Citroën's other driver and the four-time category champion, did not finish the race. The Frenchman retired without a specified mechanical problem or incident.

Drugovich Completes Complicated Debut for Andretti

Felipe Drugovich finished 12th in his first full-time race with Andretti. Drugovich had crashed in qualifying, forcing him to start 17th. The Attack Mode strategy took him to sixth place after the lap 27 green flag, but he lost six positions in the final one-lap sprint.

The result left Drugovich out of the points on his home debut, although he showed enough speed to compete in the midfield. Andretti leads the teams' championship with 25 points (only counting Dennis's points as Drugovich didn't score).

The other debutants had more complicated weekends. Martí ended up in the hospital for check-ups after his accident. Ticktum retired on the opening lap after contact with de Vries that caused a puncture. Taylor Barnard (DS Penske) finished the race 13th, one lap behind the leader.

Next Stop in Mexico City

Formula E returns on January 10 at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez for the Mexico City E-Prix, a circuit that has been part of the calendar since Season 2. Dennis leads the championship with 25 points, followed by Rowland (19) and Cassidy (15). Wehrlein also has 15 points but drops to fourth on the tie-break criteria.

In the constructors' standings, Porsche leads with 37 points over Stellantis (25 points from Citroën and customer team DS Penske). Nissan has 18 and Jaguar 14 in the top positions.
