A puncture in stage 11 put Elfyn Evans' championship lead at risk during the second leg of the Saudi Arabia Rally, allowing Kalle Rovanperä to enter the world title fight. Evans, who arrived in Saudi Arabia leading the championship by three points over Sébastien Ogier, lost 1m38s changing a wheel and dropped to eighth place in the rally. Ogier moved up to sixth, two positions ahead of the Welshman.
Rovanperä was the one who benefited the most by avoiding the tire problems that affected multiple teams in SS14. The Finn moved up to fifth place in the rally and reduced his championship deficit to 24 points, fully entering the battle for his third consecutive title.
Rovanperä wins SS14 and moves up to fifth overall
Rovanperä was one of the few to avoid punctures in SS14 and took the best time in the rally's most chaotic stage. His fifth place in the overall classification puts him ahead of Evans and close to Ogier for the final leg.
"The situation doesn't favor us yet, but we're in the mix and tomorrow we'll enjoy our last day and go for everything"
Kalle Rovanperä
With 10 points available on Saturday plus those from the Power Stage, Rovanperä needs to finish ahead of Evans and close to Ogier to have mathematical chances.
Evans drops to eighth place
Evans suffered the hardest blow in Um Al Jerem when a pressure alarm forced him to stop and change a wheel. The decision cost him almost two minutes, putting his year-long championship lead at risk.
"What happened this morning wasn't ideal. With so much road ahead, we had to stop and change instead of continuing," explained Evans. From eighth place, Evans must overcome both Ogier and Rovanperä to maintain his title chances.
Ogier moves up to sixth in SS14
Ogier also lost tire pressure in SS14 but limited the damage to 23.8s, finishing 0.2s behind Rovanperä in the overall classification.
"We have our destiny in our own hands," stated Ogier. "Tomorrow we hope to stay out of trouble and give everything for the ninth title." His sixth position in the rally puts him two places ahead of Evans, a crucial advantage to score more points on Saturday.
Fourmaux loses lead due to early arrival
Mārtiņš Sesks inherited the lead after Adrien Fourmaux received a one-minute penalty for arriving early at a time control. The Latvian maintains a 3.4s lead over Thierry Neuville, who benefited from the chaos to move up to second place.
Fourmaux had ended Friday with a 2.4s lead but the infringement relegated him to fourth place. Takamoto Katsuta completes the provisional podium, 41.5s behind the leader.
Multiple retirements due to tire problems
Sami Pajari lost his chances for a first victory when he had to change a wheel in SS13, dropping from second to seventh place and losing two minutes. Ott Tänak had a catastrophic day with four punctures, finishing 16th with a 2m30s penalty for arriving late.
Nasser Al-Attiyah suffered the most unusual problem when his jack got stuck after a puncture, losing over seven minutes. Josh McErlean was also delayed by tire problems in the M-Sport Ford.
Toyota has already secured the manufacturers' title, but the internal battle between Evans, Ogier and Rovanperä will be decided in Saturday's final 65.86 kilometers. Evans desperately needs to recover positions, Ogier must maintain his positional advantage, and Rovanperä can bet on fast stages to complete the comeback.
