William Byron won the Xfinity 500 at Martinsville Speedway from the pole position, leading 304 of the 500 laps to secure his spot in the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4. The victory marks his third of the year and the 16th of his NASCAR Cup Series career.

Byron of the #24 Chevrolet beat Ryan Blaney in a race that determined the final four competitors for the NASCAR championship. Blaney finished second after leading 177 laps, and Chase Elliott took third place at Martinsville Speedway.

Four Drivers Advance to the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4

Byron joins Kyle Larson, Denny Hamlin, and Chase Briscoe as the four drivers who will compete for the NASCAR title at Phoenix Raceway next Sunday. Larson secured the fourth spot on points to maintain his position, while Hamlin and Briscoe had already locked in their qualification earlier with wins in the two previous races of this playoff round. The Championship 4 features a showdown between two Chevrolets from Hendrick Motorsports against two Toyotas from Joe Gibbs Racing.

Christopher Bell, Joey Logano, Blaney, and Elliott were eliminated from NASCAR championship contention. Bell finished seventh, which was not enough to surpass Larson in the points standings by just seven points. Logano took eighth place, and Blaney and Elliott were eliminated by narrow margins. This is the second consecutive year that Bell has been the "first one out" of the Championship 4.

Mechanical Issues Hamper Hamlin and Briscoe at Martinsville

Although they were already qualified, Hamlin and Briscoe faced engine issues during the late stages at Martinsville Speedway. Hamlin finished 35th after retiring on lap 334, and Briscoe dropped out on lap 295 to place 37th.

The race was decided by a bold three-lane pass that Byron executed in traffic to definitively pass Blaney with 44 laps remaining. Blaney, the 2023 champion, finished just 0.717 seconds behind, missing another chance to fight for the title.

NASCAR Post-Race Comments

Byron expressed his satisfaction with the victory: "Things have a way of working out. God really tests your resilience a lot of times. We've been tested. Just amazing. I'm out of breath. Thank you to the fans for coming out. Incredible crowd."

Blaney acknowledged Byron's superiority: "The 24 was just a little bit better than us there at the end. It seemed like I would lose a little bit of rear traction faster than he would. He was able to maintain it longer than I was. That's how he got the lead."

Larson commented on his qualification: "I'm surprised that the two tires were that good on the restart. I'm happy for him. Happy for our team. Happy for Hendrick Motorsports. This win is about as good as it could get for us."

Next Event: NASCAR Championship 4 at Phoenix Raceway

The NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 will be held next Sunday at Phoenix Raceway, where Byron, Larson, Hamlin, and Briscoe will compete for the 2025 season title. The NASCAR race will determine the series champion. It will be a manufacturer duel with Chevrolet (Hendrick Motorsports) versus Toyota (Joe Gibbs Racing) for the championship.
