Gerardo Rodríguez won the Trucks Mexico Series playoff semifinal this Sunday at the Óvalo Aguascalientes México and keeps his hopes of repeating as champion alive. Rodríguez had never won a Regular Season championship, but now has the opportunity to win his second consecutive title in the playoffs.
The 90-lap race defined the four finalists who will compete for the championship on November 9th at the Autódromo Internacional Miguel E. Abed in Puebla. Mateo Girón, the 2025 Regular Season champion, leads the list of contenders alongside Everardo Fonseca and Carlos Novelo.
Girón and Rodríguez Had Contact in San Luis Potosí
The competition between Girón and Rodríguez has defined the 2025 season. In the previous round at the Súper Óvalo Potosino, they made contact in the final laps while Rodríguez was trying to challenge for the lead of the regular season championship. Girón crossed the line first to win his first Regular Season title, while Rodríguez fell back to fifth place.
The regular season numbers: Girón with six wins against five from Rodríguez during the regular phase. Girón maintained an 18-point advantage for much of the campaign.
Rodríguez earned his sixth win of the year in Aguascalientes, keeping his options alive to repeat the 2024 title.
Espinosa, Aranda and Mohnhaupt Eliminated from Playoffs
Roberto Espinosa, Valeria Aranda, and Alexandra Mohnhaupt were eliminated from the championship fight. Espinosa, who finished second in the San Luis Potosí race and confirmed fourth place in the regular season championship with 383 points, finished last in Aguascalientes.
Aranda, third in the regular season championship with 396 points, finished 14th in the semifinal. Aranda's elimination is unexpected considering she had earned her direct qualification to the playoffs by her position in the championship.
Mohnhaupt, who earned her ticket as a wildcard by defeating Rafael Maggio in the final regular season round, finished seventh but without the necessary points to advance.
Special Qualifying with Tire Change Favors Rodríguez
On Saturday, a special qualifying session included a mandatory pit stop for tire changes. The format rewarded both on-track speed and team efficiency.
Alessandros Racing executed the perfect pit stop for Rodríguez, combining his fast lap time with the mechanics' impeccable work. This pole position gave him the initial advantage that he maintained throughout the race.
The starting grid placed the playoff contenders in mixed positions: Girón second, Fonseca fourth, Aranda fifth, Novelo seventh, Espinosa eighth and Mohnhaupt tenth.
Rodríguez Maintains Lead in 90 Uninterrupted Laps
The event's development benefited Rodríguez. Only a minor incident interrupted the first half, without altering the running order at the front. The second segment ran completely under green flag conditions, eliminating opportunities for his pursuers to mount a comeback.
Fonseca finished second, guaranteeing his pass to the final. Girón completed the top three, keeping his aspirations intact. Novelo finished fourth, enough to qualify among the four finalists.
Final on November 9th at Autódromo Miguel E. Abed
On November 9th, four drivers will have a mathematical chance to be crowned champion. Girón arrives with the opportunity to win both the Regular Season and the absolute championship in the same season.
Rodríguez looks to emulate his 2024 success, when he won the championship in the playoffs despite not having won the regular season title. Fonseca and Novelo complete the four finalists with mathematical chances to win the title.
The November 9th race at the Autódromo Internacional Miguel E. Abed will close the 2025 season.
