Mateo Girón was crowned champion of the Trucks México Series Regular Season on Sunday at the Súper Óvalo Potosino . The victory in the final race resolved an 18-point battle for the regular season title with Gerardo Rodríguez , who started from the pole but finished fifth.

18 points separated two drivers heading in opposite directions

Girón arrived in San Luis Potosí with 461 points and an 18-point advantage over Rodríguez. Rodríguez had won in San Luis Potosí and Querétaro in the two previous rounds, accumulating five victories this season. Saturday's pole position in the #26 put him in the best possible position to try and snatch the lead.

Rodríguez is the defending 2024 overall champion, won in the playoffs. However, he has never conquered the Regular Season championship. Girón had also not achieved that title in his Trucks México Series career until this date.

The race decided the title over 100 laps

Girón maintained his pace from the second starting position while Rodríguez controlled the first segment. The intermediate stage ended with Girón in the lead, followed by Rodríguez and Roberto Espinosa.

The second half was closer. Rodríguez applied pressure on numerous occasions, but contact between the two in the final laps altered the positions. Girón crossed the line first to claim his sixth victory of the year. Rodríguez fell back to fifth place, which was insufficient to reach the Regular Season title.

Six victories against five in the season-long battle

The numbers reflect how close the Regular Season was. Girón accumulated six victories while Rodríguez obtained five. The final points difference will not be known until the series publishes the updated official standings, but the 18-point lead before the race translated into the Regular Season title for Girón.

The overall championship will be decided in the playoff stage, which begins on October 19 in Aguascalientes . Rodríguez will seek to defend his 2024 title, while Girón will attempt to complete the season with both crowns.

Roberto Espinosa finished second in the race and confirmed fourth place in the championship with 383 points. Valeria Aranda finished fourth in the race and secured third position in the championship with 396 points.

The seven playoff qualifiers were finalized

The top six positions in the regular season championship qualified directly for the playoffs: Girón, Rodríguez, Aranda, Espinosa, Carlos Novelo (381 points), and Everardo Fonseca (355 points). Alexandra Mohnhaupt obtained the seventh and final spot as the wild card by finishing eighth in the race, beating Rafael Maggio who was left out despite having 351 championship points.

Sebastián Rodríguez finished third in his first race at San Luis Potosí as a rookie. Carlos Novelo qualified for the playoffs due to his position in the championship even though he finished last in the final race.

The first playoff round will be on October 19 at the Óvalo Aguascalientes México .
