NASCAR announced that its races will not be broadcast on Fox Sports México due to "contractual issues" with Grupo Lauman, the channel's current owner. The weekend's races at New Hampshire Motor Speedway will be available for free on YouTube and the category's official social media channels, according to a statement from NASCAR en Español.
The interruption highlights the broader problems facing Fox Sports México under the management of Grupo Lauman, a company that has lost a series of valuable sports rights while facing legal battles over the use of the Fox Sports brand in courts in Mexico and the United States.
A Declining Sports Programming Lineup
Fox Sports México has been losing sports content since Grupo Lauman took control. Club de Futbol Monterrey disappeared from the programming in 2023 due to non-payment. The clubs Pachuca and León moved their rights to other platforms within Fox Corporation.
Various reports indicate the channel has also lost the broadcast rights for the NFL, Premier League, Concacaf, Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), and the World Rally Championship (WRC), although there is no official confirmation regarding the exact dates or specific circumstances of these losses.
Deterioration in the Quality of NASCAR Broadcasts
The NASCAR broadcasts that remained on Fox Sports México had experienced a notable decline in quality. The channel changed commentators three times in recent years, resulting in coverage characterized by limited knowledge of the sport and evident bias towards specific drivers.
Fans often compared these broadcasts unfavorably to the original English-language versions and recalled the contrast with Tony Rivera, a commentator respected for his balanced technical analysis who is no longer available for audiences in the region.
The channel also faced criticism for advertising practices that promoted "the entire season live" while multiple races were broadcast on delay or relegated to the premium paid service.
Legal Dispute Over Brand Being Settled in Courts of Two Countries
The central conflict revolves around the right to use the "Fox Sports México" brand. Grupo Lauman claims to have an exclusive license until November 2026, while Fox Corporation argues that the rights expired earlier.
Courts have begun to define this dispute. The Juzgado 35 de lo Civil de Ciudad de México (Civil Court 35 of Mexico City) recently overturned measures that protected Grupo Lauman's use of the brand. Simultaneously, a U.S. District Court in New York issued a temporary restraining order against the company for trademark misuse.
These rulings suggest the dispute transcends the specific NASCAR rights to encompass the very legitimacy of Grupo Lauman's operation under the Fox Sports brand.
