Christian Rasmussen scored his first NTT IndyCar Series victory by winning the Snap-on Milwaukee Mile 250 in West Allis, Wisconsin. The driver capitalized on a strategy of fresh tires during the final caution flag to overtake pole-sitter and champion Alex Palou with 16 laps to go.
Rasmussen, who started ninth, needed 30 races to secure his first win in the category. The victory also marked the return of Ed Carpenter Racing to the winner's circle after nearly four years without a celebration.
Palou Leads 199 Laps But Loses on Final Strategy
Alex Palou controlled much of the race from the pole position, leading 199 of the 250 laps on the Milwaukee Mile oval. The series champion maintained a two-second lead over Scott McLaughlin when rain drops began to be reported on lap 209.
The fifth and final caution flag of the race split the field into two different strategies. Palou, McLaughlin, and Josef Newgarden chose to stay on track to maintain their positions, while Rasmussen, Alexander Rossi, and Pato O’Ward opted to pit for fresh Firestone Firehawk tires.
The restart on lap 222 immediately showed the power of the new tires. Rossi and Rasmussen advanced to fourth and fifth place in just one lap, and the driver continued his charge by passing Rossi and then Newgarden on lap 227.
Rasmussen Capitalizes on Late Caution Flag
With tires that had up to 15 laps less wear than his rivals, Rasmussen began to close the gap to the leaders. He first passed McLaughlin with a high-line move on lap 230, leaving only Palou ahead.
The final battle came on lap 235 when both drivers ran side-by-side through turns 3 and 4, separated by centimeters. Palou held the low line while Rasmussen used the high line to take the lead on the main straightaway.
"We were talking before the race that if there was a late caution, then we wanted to go for new tires because it's such a big advantage," explained Rasmussen. "There were more people who did that than I thought there would be in that last group, but it was definitely the right decision."
Once in the lead, the driver was never threatened again and navigated through lapped traffic to complete the remaining 15 laps and secure the victory.
First Victory for ECR Since VeeKay in 2021
Rasmussen's triumph ended a victory drought for Ed Carpenter Racing that stretched back to May 2021, when Rinus VeeKay won on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course.
"I knew this was coming for Christian," said team owner Ed Carpenter. "He is the best out there right now on short ovals. He has shown it all season. That caution flag played in his favor, and he did an incredible job capitalizing on his new tires and Chevrolet power. It feels so good; it's been a while since we won a race."
Alexander Rossi completed a perfect day for ECR by finishing fourth, placing two of the team's cars in the top five at the checkered flag for the first time this season.
Palou Maintains Championship Lead
Although he lost the victory in the final laps, Palou scored his twelfth top-three finish in 16 races this season. The result keeps him comfortably at the front of the championship with 670 points, 165 units ahead of O’Ward.
The second place also means that Palou will not be able to equal the record of 10 victories in a single season shared by legends A.J. Foyt and Al Unser. With only one race remaining at Nashville Superspeedway on August 31st, the Chip Ganassi Racing driver has eight wins in 2025.
Scott McLaughlin completed the podium in third place with his best result of the season, while O’Ward finished fifth to maintain second place in the points.
