Julio Rejón won the first race of the NASCAR México Series playoffs at the Súper Óvalo Potosino. Rodrigo Rejón finished second, creating the first-ever 1-2 finish between brothers in the series' history, while Max Gutiérrez took third place.
"Incredible execution by the team," said Julio, who now has one win in the battle to secure a spot in the championship fight. "When it's playoff time, it's our time. As I said, we always have to step up when the playoffs come. They gave me a great car. It was fast all day and thanks to that, I was able to recover positions on track. I had a good restart and took the lead. My brother was behind me. That helped me a lot on the final lap to secure this unforgettable result."
Rodrigo Rejón completes family feat with second place
Rodrigo Rejón called the result heroic, as after losing two laps, he managed to recover to climb onto the second step of the podium.
"I was pretty sure the top spot would go to one of us two," he commented after the race. "We had a great race, and that led us to this result. Now we're thinking about my home race in Querétaro, where we'll look to repeat today's performance."
Max Gutiérrez took third place and admitted the result felt like a dream, as after fighting for the lead early on, he fell back: "Fortunately, we managed to salvage something when all seemed lost."
The top ten was completed by Eloy Sebastian, Abraham Calderón, Jake Cosío, Jorge Goeters, Rubén Rovelo, Enrique Baca, and Alex de Alba Jr.
Access issues delayed Saturday's activities
The weekend in San Luis Potosí wasn't without complications. On Friday night, a message was sent to all involved parties informing them of the temporary suspension of access to the racetrack.
"Due to issues related to the property, unrelated to the Championship, there will be no access to the racetrack until further notice," read the official statement.
Activities resumed on Saturday after 5:00 PM when personnel were able to enter the venue. Morning practices and qualifying were affected by the temporary closure of the racetrack by State Civil Protection and municipal authorities of Villa de Zaragoza.
According to unofficial reports, the reasons for the closure were related to noise and lack of restrooms for people with disabilities, though no official statement was released regarding the specific reasons.
Diego Ortíz takes Challenge Series win
In the Challenge category, Diego Ortíz climbed to the top step of the podium, delivering one of his best performances of the season by finishing among the top five overall.
"I'm leaving San Luis Potosí happy. Everything went as planned, and besides the win, today's results are a good step in the playoffs. I want to thank the whole team for giving me a great car, and I'm aiming for more in Querétaro, the next round," said Diego.
Helio Meza took second place. "It was a race where I drove with a cool head, and that paid off. I think I could have even fought for the win, but I realized Diego's car was a bit faster than mine," commented the Texan driver.
Giancarlo Vecchi completed the Challenge podium and said he hopes for many more days like this: "Today we showed we're capable of great things, and we're leaving San Luis Potosí with a good haul."
