Connor Zilisch celebrated his sixth win of the season in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Watkins Glen International on Saturday, but the celebration was overshadowed when the 19-year-old driver fractured his collarbone after falling from his #88 JR Motorsports Chevrolet in Victory Lane.
The accident occurred when Zilisch climbed onto his car's door frame to celebrate and slipped, falling to the ground. Medical teams stabilized him on a spinal board and transported him first to the track's medical center and then to a local hospital. JR Motorsports confirmed he was discharged Saturday night.
The injury forced Trackhouse Racing to withdraw the #87 entry that Zilisch was scheduled to drive in Sunday's Cup Series race, costing him his fourth appearance in NASCAR's top series.
45-minute red flag for multi-car accident
The Mission 200 was marked by a 16-car accident that brought out a 45-minute red flag with eight laps remaining. The incident began when Austin Hill made contact with Michael McDowell in turns 5 and 6, triggering the multi-car chaos.
McDowell, making his first Xfinity Series appearance in nine years, took the hardest hit in the accident.
It was unfortunate and I feel bad for everyone at Kaulig Racing. We had a couple opportunities and I was hoping to get to Victory Lane, but that's racing
Hill, who finished fourth, explained the incident during the broadcast: "The #11 [McDowell] had been struggling ahead of me for a few laps. I thought if I got enough momentum I could get to his left side and gain that position."
Teammate duel
The race initially developed as a battle between JR Motorsports teammates Zilisch and Shane van Gisbergen. The New Zealander, who started second alongside polesitter Zilisch, kept pace for much of the 82 laps before contact with 18 laps remaining.
"He [van Gisbergen] came down on my nose," Zilisch reported over the radio immediately after the incident. When he asked his team "if I hit him, tell me," they told him to focus on racing.
Van Gisbergen, who will start from the front row in Sunday's Cup race, didn't blame Zilisch. "I'm pretty disappointed, disappointed for the JR Motorsports guys," he said. "The car wasn't great but we still put ourselves in good position. I haven't seen it yet. I'll look at it later and we'll sort it out."
Championship lead extended
With his sixth win of the year, Zilisch extended his Xfinity Series championship lead over teammate Justin Allgaier, who now trails by seven points. The driver led 60 of 82 laps and finished 2.326 seconds ahead of Sam Mayer.
The victory ties Zilisch one win shy of the rookie record set by Christopher Bell with seven wins in 2018. His teammate Sammy Smith completed the podium in third.
Harrison Burton maintains the 12th playoff position with his 10th-place finish, holding a 30-point advantage over his cousin Jeb Burton and 38 over Ryan Sieg with three races remaining before the postseason.
Injury history
This isn't the first time Zilisch has missed time due to injury this season. In April he suffered a lower back injury during a last-lap crash at Talladega Superspeedway, forcing him to miss the Texas Motor Speedway race. Kyle Larson substituted and won the race in the #88.
The next Xfinity Series race will be Friday, August 22 at Daytona International Speedway, where Ryan Truex is the defending winner of the Wawa 250 Powered by Coca-Cola.
