Kalle Rovanperä finished Friday at the top of the Rally Finland leaderboard with a 4.9-second advantage over Thierry Neuville. The Toyota driver won two stages in the dry morning conditions and managed to maintain his position during the challenging rainy conditions that arrived in the afternoon.
Pajari starts strong at home with two morning stage wins
Youngster Sami Pajari opened the day with a stage win in Laukaa, just one-tenth faster than his teammate Takamoto Katsuta. Pajari repeated the victory in Ruuhimäki, ending the morning in third position overall. The driver, who secured his first WRC stage win one year ago, delivered again on home soil. Rovanperä dominated the two central stages of the morning loop, building an initial 4.4-second advantage. The dry and fast conditions favored local drivers, with the top seven separated by less than 10 seconds.
Rain changes the afternoon scenario
Conditions turned treacherous when intermittent rain arrived for the second pass through the stages. Rovanperä described his driving as "terrifying" and admitted being "all over the place," but his experience in these situations allowed him to win the seventh stage. The Toyota driver shared the fastest time in the eighth stage with Adrien Fourmaux, extending his overall lead. Although he lost 1.9 seconds in the final two tests of the day, he retained the lead.
Neuville capitalizes on rain to close the gap
Thierry Neuville enjoyed one of his best days in Finland, climbing to second position. The defending champion admitted the dry morning stages were too fast for him but found his rhythm when the rain made driving technique more important.
"In the afternoon, driving skill was more important than flat-out speed, and that's what I enjoyed most," explained Neuville. The Hyundai driver ended the day 4.9 seconds behind Rovanperä.
Fourmaux completed the provisional podium, 7.7 seconds behind the leader. Fourmaux had been Rovanperä's closest challenger at midday but the wet conditions relegated him to third.
Katsuta celebrates 50th stage win
Takamoto Katsuta celebrated his 50th WRC stage win during the sixth test, which temporarily moved him to second overall. A rear-end slide in the following stage cost him 2.4 seconds, leaving him fourth - just 0.4 seconds behind Fourmaux and 8.1 seconds off the lead. Katsuta showed strong pace throughout the day and remains in the victory battle with two days remaining.
Troubles for Tänak and Solberg
Championship leader Ott Tänak suffered from sweeping the dusty stages. Tänak finished tenth, over one minute behind the leader, after an 8G impact when he went off-road and hit a tree in the seventh stage. The accident damaged the cooling system of his Hyundai i20 N, but he was able to continue. "The impact was quite strong and we damaged the cooling system. We lost the fan and some parts, so it was complicated to complete the loop," explained Tänak.
In WRC2, Oliver Solberg was forced to retire when his Toyota GR Yaris Rally2 hit a rock that had been dragged onto the road and ended up in a ditch. Solberg had previously lost time due to a navigation error that dropped him from third to seventh in class.
Drivers' comments
"It hasn't been easy at all, I'm really not in my comfort zone, but I'm pushing quite hard," declared Rovanperä at the end of the day. The two-time world champion expressed satisfaction at regaining his rhythm at his home rally. Neuville was positive about his performance: "I'd say it was a good afternoon, but Kalle is obviously still very fast, though we're not too far away." Pajari, fifth overall, expressed his joy at competing at the front at home: "It's really great to be in the fight at our home rally, and it's beautiful to see how much the crowd cheers."
