Alex Palou achieved his sixth victory in nine IndyCar 2025 races on Sunday by inheriting first place when Scott Dixon ran out of fuel on lap 53 of the XPEL Grand Prix at Road America. The Chip Ganassi Racing driver completed all 55 laps at Elkhart Lake without additional stops.

Dixon had led until that moment but had to enter the pits due to lack of fuel, handing victory to his teammate. Palou becomes the first IndyCar driver to win at least six races in a season since Will Power in 2011.

Felix Rosenqvist finishes from 12th position

Rosenqvist finished second, 2.1725 seconds behind Palou after moving up from 12th starting position. Rosenqvist had made his last stop on lap 42 and recorded the fastest lap time of the race on the final lap, but couldn't catch the leader.

Santino Ferrucci completed the top three in his AJ Foyt Racing Chevrolet, earning his fourth consecutive top-5 finish. Kyle Kirkwood finished fourth and remains second in the championship with 293 points, now 93 points behind Palou.

Record nine leaders at Road America

The race established a new record of nine different leaders at Road America. Louis Foster, the pole winner, led the first three laps before giving way to Scott McLaughlin, who held the lead until lap 11.

Five yellow flags in the first 30 laps generated different fuel and tire strategies. Dixon had pitted on lap 38, two laps before Palou, a difference that proved crucial to the outcome.

Only Palou and Kirkwood have won in 2025

With this victory, Palou and Kirkwood maintain their monopoly on wins in the 2025 season. Palou accumulates six victories against three for the Andretti Global driver. The last time only two drivers won the first nine races of a season was in 1980 with Bobby Unser and Johnny Rutherford.

Marcus Armstrong achieved his best result of the year by finishing fifth, placing Meyer Shank Racing with two cars in the top-5 alongside Rosenqvist. The race recorded 348 on-track overtakes, including 96 in the top-10.

Honda maintains its perfect streak with winning engines in all nine races held. The next race will be The Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio on Sunday, July 6th.
