William Byron won the BetMGM 300 in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Charlotte Motor Speedway after overtaking Justin Allgaier in overtime. The #17 driver claimed his first Charlotte victory after recovering from an early penalty.
The Saturday, May 24 race extended beyond its scheduled 205 laps due to multiple late-race accidents. Byron used fresh tires to pass Allgaier on the first overtime lap and maintained his lead until a collision between Jeb Burton and Brennan Poole ended the race under caution.
The turning point on lap 180
The decisive moment came on lap 180 when Allgaier led under caution. The defending champion chose to stay on track while most of the field pitted for fresh tires.
Byron took new tires during that caution period. Subsequent multiple yellows allowed him to work through the field, gaining positions on each restart until positioning himself for the victory.
Byron starts from the rear
Byron had dominated the first two stages, leading 69 of 71 laps. A speeding penalty during the Stage 2 break sent him to the rear for the lap 99 restart.
Byron fell one lap down during green-flag pit stops with just over 50 laps remaining. A debris caution after Taylor Gray suffered a flat tire allowed him to regain the lost lap.
Multiple late-race incidents
The final 25 laps featured several accidents that altered the race. A spin by Carson Kvapil with 22 laps remaining led to Allgaier's decision to stay out.
Restarts proved chaotic. Harrison Burton sustained damage in one pileup, while Katherine Legge and JJ Yeley were involved in another incident. Brandon Jones bounced off the outside wall, collecting Leland Honeyman and Kyle Sieg, forcing overtime.
The winning pass
On the overtime restart, Byron lined up behind Allgaier on the inside lane. With fresher tires, Byron powered around the outside in Turn 4 on the first extra lap.
Allgaier couldn't hold on with worn tires. Connor Zilisch and Nick Sanchez also got by, relegating him to fourth.
A hometown victory
For Byron, this marked his fifth Xfinity Series win and first since 2017. Allgaier led 103 laps but the defeat proved particularly bitter.
Despite the disappointment, Allgaier maintains a 72-point lead over Austin Hill in the standings. The race also proved strong for four rookies finishing top-10: Zilisch (second), Sanchez (third), Dean Thompson (sixth) and Christian Eckes (tenth). Ryan Ellis earned his first series top-10 in his 144th attempt.
