The sixth round of the 2024/25 Formula E Championship held on May 3rd in Monaco concluded with Oliver Rowland as the absolute winner. The Nissan driver took advantage of race conditions to secure his third victory of the current season, extending his lead in the overall standings.
From second place to the top step
Rowland, who started from second position on the grid, remained calm during the opening laps while observing the performance of young pole-sitter Taylor Barnard (NEOM McLaren). His opportunity came on lap 13 when he overtook Barnard at the chicane, forcing the rookie to concede position after a minor mistake over the curbs.
The race featured two full-course yellow flag periods: the first occurred when Da Costa hit the wall at Anthony Nogues following a failed overtaking attempt on Mortara, and the second appeared due to a technical issue with Evans' car.
Calculated moves
Energy management and the use of PIT BOOST and ATTACK MODE systems proved decisive in the race outcome. By lap 26, Nyck de Vries (Mahindra) and the Andretti drivers appeared to have the advantage while leading the pack.
However, Rowland had wisely saved his final power boost activation. Within just one lap, the British driver first passed the Andretti cars in the first sector and then overtook De Vries in the tunnel, maneuvers that allowed him to take the lead and build a two-second advantage by the checkered flag.
Nyck de Vries finished second, marking his return to the podium for the first time since London 2022 and giving Mahindra its first top-three result since Mexico 2023.
Jake Dennis completed the podium despite receiving a five-second penalty for exceeding the speed limit during one of the yellow flag periods. His teammate Nico Mueller helped keep the chasing pack at bay but was overtaken by Edoardo Mortara at the finish line to take fifth place.
Pascal Wehrlein, who set the fastest lap time of 1:28.329, finished sixth, scoring valuable points for the Porsche team.
Championship standings after Monaco
With this result, Rowland has accumulated 94 points in the drivers' championship, leading defending champion Wehrlein by 34 points. In the teams' standings, Porsche maintains the lead with 114 points, but Nissan is closing in with 105, while Mahindra Racing has moved up to third position.
In the manufacturers' table, Nissan has overtaken Porsche, reversing their positions from previous rounds.
Fans can enjoy more action tomorrow Sunday with the seventh round of the championship starting at 15:05 local time, marking the first time Monaco has hosted a double-header weekend in Formula E history.
