Kyle Larson dominated from start to finish in Saturday's SciAps 300 NASCAR Xfinity Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway on April 12. The Hendrick Motorsports driver of the No. 17 Chevrolet led 277 of 300 laps to claim his first series win of the season and the 16th of his Xfinity career.
The pole-sitter crossed the finish line 2.054 seconds ahead of Carson Kvapil, with Justin Allgaier rounding out the podium in third. Allgaier earned a $100,000 bonus as the top finisher among the four Xfinity Dash 4 Cash eligible drivers.
"It's awesome. I would have liked to win last night, but came up a little short. To get a win this weekend for Jon and everybody that's been a part of his life is special."
Larson dedicated his emotional victory to his friend and PR representative Jon Edwards, who passed away unexpectedly during the week leading up to Bristol's race weekend.
JR Motorsports Shows Strength at Bristol
Carson Kvapil equaled his career-best Xfinity finish (previously set at Dover last year) by passing Justin Allgaier in traffic on Lap 298 to secure runner-up honors. His No. 1 JR Motorsports Chevrolet came alive in the final laps.
"We just kept working on it and making the car better every pit stop. At the end I felt we had a pretty good car, but with all the traffic it was hard to get in a rhythm."
Sammy Smith finished fourth, giving JR Motorsports three of the top four positions behind Larson. Smith, Allgaier, Kvapil and Joe Gibbs Racing's Brandon Jones (fifth) qualified for next Saturday's Dash for Cash at Rockingham.
Race Recap: Cautions and Drama
The action-packed race saw multiple incidents. As Larson cruised toward a Stage 1 victory, a crash between Sheldon Creed and Brennan Poole brought out a red flag that halted the action for 14 minutes, 8 seconds, eliminating two of the four Dash 4 Cash contenders.
After the restart, Sam Mayer and Ryan Sieg - who stayed out - finished 1-2 in Stage 1. Larson regained the lead for Stage 2, winning it by nearly nine seconds over Allgaier.
In the final stage, Allgaier briefly took the lead from Larson after a restart on Lap 182, but ten laps later Larson bumped Allgaier's Chevrolet in Turn 1, moving him up the track and retaking the point.
Later, Mason Massey's lapped car blocked Allgaier's line exiting Turn 4, resulting in contact between the Camaros that sent Massey spinning near the start/finish line. William Sawalich, running inside the top ten, got collected in the incident and was eliminated.
