Justin Allgaier took the lead on the final lap to win the Hard Rock Bet 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway and secure an additional $100,000 prize from the Dash 4 Cash program in the Xfinity series, solidifying his position in the championship.
Last-Minute Change
For much of Saturday's race, Kyle Larson was in control. The NASCAR Cup Series champion led 132 of the 201 laps and had a 15-second lead when a yellow flag appeared with just eight laps remaining.
The race went into overtime, and on the final restart, Sam Mayer, who had chosen to line up behind Larson rather than beside him, made contact with the rear of the Chevrolet No. 17 from Hendrick Motorsports, affecting Larson's car's stability.
This contact allowed Austin Hill and Allgaier, who were on the outside line, to advance. Hill briefly took the lead, but Allgaier passed him on the final lap to secure his second consecutive victory after his result in Las Vegas the previous week.
"This is a credit to this team," said Allgaier, 39. "Honestly, it seemed like one of those days that wasn't going to be ours. We fell behind but managed to recover and bring this Chevrolet to Victory Lane. It's special."
The JR Motorsports driver added, "I feel like this track has gotten the better of me many times. I was worried when I saw the yellow flag, but it worked in my favor. I regret perhaps affecting Kyle's chance at a weekend triple because I think he'll have a good opportunity tomorrow. But we were in the right place at the right time, and I'm happy for this team."
Larson Falls Short Despite Dominance
The result was disappointing for Larson, who had won the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series race on Friday night and was looking to join Kyle Busch as the only drivers in NASCAR history to win races in all three national series in the same weekend.
"I've been through this several times here; it's disappointing to see another race at Homestead end this way," said Larson, who finished fourth.
"I can't move forward when my rear tires are off the ground," he explained about the contact from Mayer's car on the restart. "I did everything I thought I could, and the 41 just stayed behind and hit me hard. It's a shame, but I'm glad I had that lead at the end."
Mayer, who finished second, explained his side of the contact: "Unfortunately, I got to his bumper too early. He took off very late in the zone, used the rules to his advantage, and that's what you have to do at this level to gain an edge. But he waited a long time, and I wasn't prepared for him to wait that long."
Bonus Program Continues
Allgaier not only took home a trophy but also the first $100,000 bonus check from series sponsor Xfinity. He, Mayer, Hill, and Jesse Love (10th) were eligible for the additional payout based on their results the previous week in Las Vegas.
The second of the four races in the program will be next Saturday at Martinsville Speedway. Allgaier, Mayer, Hill, and Sheldon Creed (fifth place) will compete for the next $100,000 bonus, which will go to the highest finisher among the four.
Allgaier is now the first driver in the series with more than one win in 2025 and holds a 29-point lead over Mayer in the standings.
