FIA Takes Direct Control of World and European Rallycross Championships

FIA To Administer World Rallycross After Promotion Changes

The Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) has confirmed that it will directly operate both the World and European Rallycross Championships starting in 2025, marking a change in management following the departure of the previous commercial rights holders.

Direct Funding to Ensure Continuity

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem announced the organization's direct investment in both series after three months of market analysis. This decision aligns with his plans to increase participation in various motorsport categories.

"The FIA is making an investment not only in Rallycross but in the future of our sport," said Ben Sulayem. "We are committed to driving this category forward by attracting new audiences and improving competition for drivers, teams, commercial partners, and most importantly, the fans."

The championships will be owned and managed by the FIA with the support of a service provider. The 2025 calendars are being finalized and will be announced before March 14, following approval by the World Motor Sport Council. The World Championship will feature seven events, while the European series will have six.

Background on Administrative Changes

This management shift follows several changes that have affected the championships in recent years. IMG, which had promoted World RX since its inception in 2014, ended its involvement at the end of 2020 during the planning for the category’s electrification. This initial electrification attempt led to the withdrawal of several manufacturers.

In early 2021, WRC Promoter GmbH acquired the commercial rights but faced various challenges, including complications from the COVID-19 pandemic and difficulties with the transition to electrification. In August 2024, reports emerged that WRC Promoter’s owners were considering a possible sale, raising concerns about the championships' future.

Media Plan Focused on Accessibility

The FIA is prioritizing free-to-air broadcasting and digital access to strengthen both championships. With a current audience of over 30 million followers in more than 100 countries, the organization aims to expand this reach by enhancing visibility for commercial partners.

Both Volvo Construction Equipment and Hoosier Racing Tire Europe have confirmed that they will continue as the Official Track Construction Partner and Official Tire Supplier, respectively, for the World and European Rallycross Championships.

Continuation of the 'Battle of Technologies' Format

The 'Battle of Technologies' format introduced in 2024 will continue under FIA management. This setup allows combustion-engine vehicles to compete against fully electric cars, adding a distinctive element to World RX that reflects the diversity of the automotive landscape.

Strengthening Off-Road Motorsport

The FIA's investment also reinforces its intention to develop the off-road motorsport structure. A dedicated plan will work with National Sporting Authorities to consolidate this process, from grassroots cross-car events to national and regional championships, culminating in the FIA World Rallycross Championship.

"The championship has great potential for global expansion," said FIA Director of Junior Road Sport, Emilia Abel. "I am confident that this new FIA-led management phase will bring positive results. The FIA will focus its efforts on fans and participants during this new stage."
