NASCAR Reverses Chase Briscoe Penalties after Daytona

The National Motorsports Appeals Panel has completely overturned the penalties imposed on Chase Briscoe and Joe Gibbs Racing following a post-race inspection at Daytona.

The decision, announced on March 5, 2025, invalidates all previous penalties related to the rear wing base of the No. 19 Toyota.

Original Penalties Canceled

In mid-February, NASCAR imposed severe L2-level penalties on Briscoe's team after inspectors at the R&D Center in Concord, North Carolina, claimed to have found unauthorized modifications to the rear wing base of the car, a single-source supplier part protected under the regulations for NASCAR's Next Gen cars.

These penalties included:

  • A $100,000 fine to the team owner Joe Gibbs
  • Loss of 100 championship points for both the driver and the owner
  • Confiscation of 10 playoff points
  • Four-race suspension for crew chief James Small

The harsh penalties had sunk Briscoe to the bottom of the standings with a negative balance of 67 points, creating a substantial deficit at the start of the season.

Explanation from the Appeals Panel

The three-member appeals panel — comprised of Dixon Johnston, Hunter Nickell, and Cathy Rice — determined that Joe Gibbs Racing did not violate any of the rules specified in the penalty notice.

In its explanation, the panel stated: "The elongation of some of the holes in the rear wing base of the No. 19 Cup car is caused by the process of securing that specific wing base to the rear deck and not by a modification of the single-source part."

This technical clarification suggests that the observed irregularities resulted from standard installation procedures rather than deliberate tampering.

Team Reaction

Following the decision, Joe Gibbs expressed his appreciation for NASCAR's appeals process: "We are grateful for the consideration and the ruling by the National Motorsports Appeals Panel. It's obviously great news for our No. 19 team and everyone at Joe Gibbs Racing."

The owner of JGR added that the team looks forward to focusing on the rest of their season, starting with this weekend's race in Phoenix.

With the reversal of the penalties, Briscoe will regain his championship and playoff points, significantly improving his position in the standings as the NASCAR Cup Series continues.
